Our very sad news
Dear friends,
While we were in Twizel for Easter Sara's condition deteriorated, so we returned home late on Monday. On Tuesday we saw the doctor in CHOC and Sara had an MRI scan in the evening. The scan has shown that the tumour has continued to grow despite the treatment and was the cause of her worsening illness.
On Wednesday afternoon we were given the devasting and tragic news that there was nothing more that could be done to cure the illness. Our time with Sara is now very precious. The steriod medication has been changed and there has been a marked improvement in her symptoms in the last 3 days allowing her some quality time during these precious months.
We are planning a family motorhome holiday around some of our favourite places in the South Island for the next few weeks, and all going well we will depart mid- week.
Thank you for all the support, text messages, phone calls, cards, visits, prayers and presents over the last few months they have been a wonderful inspiration for us, especially Sara.
We will continue to post the occassional blog on the site while we are away when it feels right and the chance is there.
Love to you all
Rob, Sue, Kate and Sara

Dear Dear Youngs
This is absolutely gut wrenching news and so hard for you to actually put into words and share with us.
Indeed every moment with Sara is precious. Go well on your journey around this beautiful land of ours.

Dear Sara, Kate, Sue and Rob
Words are just totally inadequate sometimes. The Munros have written everything needing to be said. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you for all the blogs Rob. Apologies if sometimes the responses have been a bit flippant. I suspect many of us will keep blogging on, and when you read them know that we are all out here in cyberland, thinking of you and passing on our love.

I cannot tell you how devastated I am to hear of your sad news. I cannot begin to imagine what you must all be going through. As soon as I read the blog I called Christopher and told him as he is away and not near a computer. He and I both wish to tell you how sad we feel and that you are all in our thoughts. You have all taught us that life is so precious and that you have to live each day as it comes. Enjoy the time you have and know that we are with you in thought and spirit every step of the way. Hi,
I don't know what to say to you guys. Our love is with you. I wish I could do more! I know you will enjoy the beautiful South Island.! I dream about being there myself!!
I feel so stupid Sara. I wasn't thinking straight and sent you some photos to your address inn CHCH but forgot to put NZ. GOd knows where it will go now - prob. CHCH Canada or England! I will get some reprinted and then send them to your Twizel address. Happy journeying. We are thinking of your every inch of the way.
Lots of love Pip, John Petra and Nicole.
Dearest Youngs,
What sad ,sad news to share. Sara, even though the kiddies here at Mount Cook School don't really know you, they know of your brave story and the battle you are undergoing. As a school, we recently read the story of Sadako and the thousand paper cranes - about a little Japanese girl who died of leukemia after Hiroshima. The children here got right into making paper cranes and often speak of you as they are making them so know that your story is touching others far and wide. if you make it to Mount Cook on your travels, be sure to pop into the school. In the meantime, may you enjoy each moment on this beautiful planet. Lots and lots of love, Bu & bryan

To all the Youngs,
Hope that you have got away on you big adventure around all you fav spots. The weather has certainly turned for you but as I suppose you are heading north, it may improve. The weather has been so good for the hols, it was bound to deteriorate sometime.
I have spent time going over your blogsite recently and it has been a real journey for you and for us all to have been able to share it with you. You have all been so courageous and strong.
There are so, so many people thinking of you and sending their loving thoughts.
Love, hugs and best wishes from us all.
Cynthia and the Stephens family.
Sara, Rob, Sue and Kate,
It appears that your friends and whanau have said it all, but I wanted to add my love, support and admiration also to the swiftly growing mountain!
Sara, I'll always remember your gorgeous grin when I introduced myself as "Miss Stevens" my first day at TAS as a student teacher - you made my visit!
Safe travels (hope you didn't get caught in the floods or snow!).

Hi Sue, Rob, Kate, Sara
We're thinking of you as you head over the big Takaka hill and out to Totaranui. Helen tells me things are going well at the moment, soooo pleased to hear it. Enjoy your time with Mart and Jane too.
Same old, same old here. Winter has arrived, foggy this morning and cold all day today. Josh started karate last night and thinks he is an expert already. Bu is wonderful with the kids. Josh has the busiest week of our family - rugby, basketball, Science Club, and now karate. Me? - parenting and teaching and not much more! (although we do have a babysitter so we can go to the movies tonight at the Events Centre).
Ryan and Kyle continue to eat and eat and eat and grow and grow and grow. No, that isn't fair, they do lots of other delightful 2-and-a- half-year-old things too. The language development is so much fun at the moment. Kyle is being particularly bossy to Ryan. Then Ryan just stands and scowls, really big grumpy scowls, especially in the morning when Kyle is telling Ryan to stop playing and come and eat his porridge!
I can't remember if nui means many or big, meaning Totaranui is either the place of many totara or big totara. Either way, it's a special place for a special family to spend some time together - Big hugs all around, Sandy and Co.
Dear Sara and family

Hi Sara..miss you all lots though I have been enjoying an endless supply of food at weavies now that I am over pretending I had lost my appetite so as to achieve a food upgrade (which worked)When is every person going to learn I just don't do stale biscuits?
Weavie keeps calling me fatso but its just my winter coat.I have a new friend called ferret who I dont mind sharing my patch with.He is an interesting fella but am worried he maybe as smart as me and can climb in the window to pilch my food.
Hope you are getting lots of sunshine..snow all around here(oh how I love weavies waterbed)
Bye for now ...Peanut. xxoo
Hi to everyone whose checking in here still occassionally and wondering what the Twizel Young crew are up to and where they are at.... well they have been spotted at some locations ...Hanmer, up the Kaikoura Coast, Nelson and now have been ensconced at Totaranui for 10 days or more in their campavan (which is warmer than our house!). they are having a great relaxing time out there altogether, Sara is still full of smiles and rests each day, is enlarging her shell collection and last night walked to the beach to watch the full moon glistening on the sea and the phosphorescence (spelling?)in the water.. awesome I mean oarsum.
K8 is the Katie Crocker of damper making and Sara is the supreme cooker of damper... perfection is a golden crust cooked ever so lovingly over those embers.. and then with golden syrup drizzled without caution down the middle, it is scrumptious-oh-so-lip-smacking-finger-licking-yumptious. This daily ritual is essential for everyones well being.
They may come out from Totaranui in the next few days and head out to the further reaches of Golden Bay.. and down that great sandspit, wait and see!
Oh yes the haybale express has made frequent trips in to keep the dosage up and the Heine-Pearson crew has been in too bearing more cakes and healthy food.... so no fears on the appetite front!
from the Young Golden Bay crew :-)
Thankyou Aunty Haybale, lovely to hear from you that all continues to be great at Totaranui. The damper sounds delicious and the peacefulness of that place will be just what Sue, Rob, Kate and Sara need right now.
Sue, in my reading with Brian we have come across the Takaka Hill and Golden Bay area a few times recently (especially regarding caving stories). I have been drawing him maps and telling him about the Takaka Hill (including Dean's childhood carsick stories), Harwoods Hole, Farewell Spit, Pupu Springs etc. So my thoughts are doubly in that beautiful area at the moment. Enjoy your time exploring the rest of Golden Bay. Also enjoy warmer weather than we are getting!
lots of love, Sandy, Dean and the redheads.
Dear Sara, Sue, Rob and K8
We are so pleased that your time in your favourite place is so special. You must be having the only sun in the county! How are the glow worms?
Appararantly it has been really cold in Chch - I'm sure you are warmer in your mobile home than in that cold Chch house!
School ticking over. Lots of work to do - so what's new!
Not much news here. John had a big feed in Frankfurt of - what else - frankfurters! He is having a good time but looking forward to seeing Nayte in a couple of weeks.
Best wishes for the rest of your trip - have lots of great times.
Loads of Love to you all
Glenda and John
PS Looking forward to having you back in TXT range.
o all the Youngs,
Great to hear that you are having a wonderful time in Totaranui.Yes I'm sure the weather would have to be better than what we have been having. Certainly getting the winter chills.
Hope Sue you had a lovely mothers day on Sunday. The weather was foul here - raining and cold.!Mike had to head up Tekapo way as the snow was quite bad and people stuck, but it wasn't too bad once he got up there.
The damper sounds so yum. Could just see it as it was being described!! A fav of ours when we go camping too.
Happy travelling as you move on.Hope the weather stays fine for you.
James is 13 today! He had a party on Friday - bout 18 kids with loud music and hungry tummies! I survived - my last ever 13th party to get through.
Love from all the Stephens to all the Youngs.
Ben is heading up this weekend to a Ball in Nelson. Going with Mel who boards up there. A long way to go, and hope he doesn't leave some vital part of his suit behind!
Cynthia
Dear Youngs and Bloggers(Glenda & John, Cynthia & Family, Sandy & Red Heads, Cheese, Aunty Hay Bale, Nelson Crew, Twizelites and many others; your blogs are awesome and they shine brightly.
We have our "Relay for Life" next weekend here in Canuk land and I walk from 8-9pm for our 12 hour relay for life team. That walk will be for our Sara.
There will also be some special Kiwi Illuminaries around the track: In honor of Charlie Pearson, Dave Massam, Brede Arkless and a special one for Sara Young.
Each day I read your blogs and I realise how lucky and privileged I am to read so many special messages of love and support to an awesome family. It's like having our own web based "relay team for life" that connects people around the world.
Keep safe everyone.
Dear Youngs and Trish,
Hope you are getting lovely mornings and sunsets up there. Lovely day today. Victoria found a 2002 and 2003 Twizel mag in our library the other day and we have really enjoyed reading it and my Mum commented on seeing Sara everywhere through it!!
Trish - we will be thinking of you next weekend when you do your walk. A great thing and lovely to think of all those special people and to honour them.
Have a great day everyone.
Love Cynthia and family.
Hey Sara,
You really are a beautiful person, inside and out. I look at your photos and I see a girl with true beauty. I pray this message gets to you and I want you to realise not a day goes past when I don't think bout you. How brave you are and how encouraging you are to all of us.
God Bless you Sara,
You really are a star,
Sophie x x x x
Hi Young Cousins,
I am so overwhelmed every time that I read all the wonderful, beautiful blogs. I have distant but fond memories of Totoranui from when we went there as kids. Whenever I see pictures of NZ scenery, it makes me feel peaceful so I hope that you are all getting the same benefits. My thoughts are with you all everyday. Stay safe.
Love always,
Susan xxxx

Hi to all
just another quick update... the Twizel Young crew are still up here in Golden Bay. They came out from Totaranui and headed west after checking out Takaka... coffee at the Wholemeal chips and a wicked chocolate cake that was oh so chocolatey!! Gumby buying at the local sports shop.. so Sara now sports some cool blue gumboots... oh yes we can cater for all your needs in Takaka!!!
So westward-ho they went out to the DOC bach at Collingwood for a few nights, right on the beach. Its a neat spot. Then further westward... off to track down the end of the road round Whanganui Inlet and the wild west coast beaches at Patarau..and beyond but the call of the rugby on Saturday night was too strong so out they came to watch the Crusaders... ye-haaaa!!... at the Collingwood Tavern. So along with dining at the infamous Mussel Inn they really are getting into the real life up here in Golden Bay!! Theres talk of heading back in to Totaranui.... wait for the next installment!!
Reporter
Aunty Haybale
Hi Sue, Rob, Kate, Sara
Thanks again Aunty Haybale, we all appreciate the updates. The gumboots sound great, as does the choc. cake, the exploring, and the general relaxing. I remember driving past the Mussel Inn but haven't been there. I hope that Golden Bay is continuing to supply lovely weather. Winter has certainly arrived in Twizel, lovely today, but frosty then foggy yesterday and very cold, a stressful day inside with two year old twins who were appropriately renamed Belligerent and Bolshy. The day improved with a fun evening at Glenda's for Mark's 40th - complete with soccer theme and dancing and singing - Meat Loaf, Queen, Beatles, Spit Enz ... Today Dean and Josh have been out shovelling sheep poo for the rugby fundraiser, Josh was particularly potent and was sent to the shower as soon as he got home. I took Ryan and Kyle along the walkway behind Norwest Arch- they walked all the way but were tired by the time we got home!
Thinking of you all, take care.
Lots of love, Sandy, Dean, Josh, Ryan and Kyle (who are no longer Belligerent and Bolshy, just their gorgeous selves again, long may is last!).
Dear Cheese,
Cynthia here - hope you don't mind me replying, especially as I had been talking about damper in my blog too. Damper is a scone-like mixture which is made to be wrapped around sticks and cooked over an open fire when camping or such-like! It is particularly scrummy when you are standing around a bonfire and you are really missing out on an experience if you have not partaken in this!!After cooking, the outside is toasty hard and then soft and hot inside (as it comes off the stick like a cocoon), you then pour your sweet of choice into it and indulge - jam, honey, golden syrup etc.........Hope this explains and there are many different versions from different people.
I remember reading AGES ago on this blogsite about Aunty Haybale and that she got the name because of her infamous lamingtons - she obviously makes amazing lamingtons - so you cam imagine the size and hugeness of them. I have never had the good luck of being able to sample them. They sound wonderful!
Please correct me anyone if I am incorrect. Hope that this is right.
To the Youngs,
Good to hear you are having a great time and whizzing all over the place. Hope you enjoyed the game last night. Good to see a NZ final for next week. Where will you be for that game?
Sara, Victoria was thrilled to hear from you again this morning - you sound as though you are really enjoying yourself.
Love to you all. I will try txt you Sue as maybe you are in coverage at the moment?
Lots of love to you all - Sara, Sue, Rob and Kate.
Cynthia and the Stephens clan.
hey gurly... sorry its been so long since i wrote 2ya! nothing much has been happening in boring old twizel... we all miss ya heaps tho! :( yay tournament in like a week! we all gunna play hard 4u gurl... so hope ya sendin ya gud luck vibez coz i think we sooo gunna need it wit out u ther ae! the art class were up in chch last week... lucki we got thru it was snowin hard out in tekapo. it must have been a funni sight tho. mrs frost in the drivers seat stressing about getting stranded. me, jess and deanna all huddled around deannas fone waiting for the weather to come on the radio and good old caitlin sitting in the front seat reading her book... as ya do! she was like the calmest out of all of us lol. we didn't really do much while we were there. the girls went indy carting (penny ewans winded me at basketball and bruised my ribs so i wasn't aloud 2go, so i played air hockey with mrs frost instead and she fully caned me! shame!) and went 2 scary movie 4 (total waste of money if you ask me... but its better than scary movie 3) and imagine me and you (yeah, the one with the lesbians! i know, weird choice but caitlin was climbing and us gurls had nothing else 2 do and that was the only movie on) and yeah. went shopping and stuff. so now we're all broke. sucks! oh yeh and we went to the art gallery and stuff (as ya would expect on a art trip right? lol) OMG! the first one was so hilarious (sorry cant't spell). we had dis dude called aLaN... i know you can't see me right now but he had a "SCARF" and he kept flicking it over his shoulder and stuff... in other words dude, he was gay! it was such a crack up! but he was one of those gay dudes that loves the sound of their own voice... so all his words sort of starting to morf into one and he totally lost my attention span. but yeh it was a pretty kewl trip. i bought me a bling ring while i was there.its so cool... well i think so anyways. its like huge (think nicole richie's sunglasses that she wears) and its covered in little diamond things, they're not real tho, i only paid $10 for it... well eitha that or i got a real bargain lol! sweet gurl. promise ima write ya sum more blogs more often... tut tut shannon!lol
catch ya later alligator... hehehe
u know i love ya,
shaz xox mwah!
Dear Sara,Kate,Rob and Sue
Great there are some 'Young' spotters out there and we can blog on knowing you are safe and enjoying 'the simple life'. With winter kicking in maybe we are all a bit like the penguins huddling and shuffling around supporting and protecting each other.
love the munros
Hi Aunty Haybale,
Are you my cousin Helen??? If so, Hi and thanks for keeping us up-to-date with all the senior Young crew.

Hey Sara!
Hope the holidays going all good, I'm sitting here in ICT, bored and very bored. You see, we are supposed to learn "online" learning, but we can't get into the website! So it's kinda weird... I heard you were in Golden Bay thats not far from me!! I'm in Motueka. I am boarding at my friends house Nicoles, because Mum and Dad had to go down South. My friend Dylan who is sitting next to me says "H" and "sends his love". Well better attempted that website again,

Hi Sara, Sue Rob and K8
sat on the beach at our local lake today. Got some sun to warm up the ole bones etc so it's shorts weather here. I was hoping to catch up with Mum this weekend. Didn't yet.
We are celebrating Queen Victoria's birthday. Had some tea, for QV but not much of our days celebration had anything to do with queens. We are glad to keep up to date via this blog, which has taken on a life of its own.
Helen and I talked last weekend to wish all of us mothers a happy mothers day.
Hope the wellies don't get 2 much use. They sound great though.
Hey Rob we have skype now so maybe someday we can do a free call.
love and hugs and smiles from the Kitimat Krew. Ruth Lothar and Katherine the Chef, plus Stefan the Pizza delivery boy. Hmm maybe he'd like to deliver you one at the camper. lol
hey sara sorry im so hopless blogging, nice to know your enjoying yourself. thinking of you always. love tesh xox
hey sara!
wow the 83rd person! cripes
cranked out a map and found totaranui, looks like great fun, keep warm babe!
love always ya soul mate!
oh yea its Aunty Haybale... again! there seems to be some doubt as to my 'realness'... its all mind over matter or is it just a state of mind? As far as Sara is concerned I am Aunty Haybale and thats all that matters!! Oh and hey I mean hay the haybales aren't huge, there is an optimum size just like real haybales they have to be in proportion!! that is proportion of sponge to chocolate sauce soaking in to coconut... oh highly technical!
Anyway enough.
Youngs last seen cruising back out West back to the camp ground at Pakawau (good winter rates there.. best deal in GB for the Twizel crew.. according to K8, who is putting togther a rough guide for Kiwis on service at locations around the area). They hope to go down the Spit tomorrow (Wednesday), revisit The Naked Possum cafe (great food there!) and maybe the following day head to Nelson. Oh yea Cheese they did visit an historic place here but it was far from boring! That was the general store in Bainham, an amazing little spot.
Oh yea and they went to the Dangerous Kitchen in town today... Rob had a great slice of cake there but Sara reckoned the pizza wasn't as good as Shorty's in Twizel!!
Glad someone updated Cheese on damper.. wow Cheese you will have to get those girls onto it for you. You haven't lived yet!
Oki doki
Catch you all later (hi cuzzie Susan in Ozzie!)
Aunty Haybale!!

Dear Twizel cousins and Aunty Haybale,
So good to hear from you Helen, I thought it was you. Thanks for the updates about Sara, Rob, Sue and Kate. As I can't be there with you all, this is the next best thing. My love and thoughts are with you everyday. Take care all. Love to ALL my Young cousins. Susan xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hi Sara, Kate, Sue and Rob,
And like the others special thanks to you Aunty Haybale for keeping us bloggers up to date with the Youngs travels and adventures. Great to hear that you are all enjoying those favourite places in GB.
Lots of love to you all. Have to send it by email this time as my usual reliable windy Wellington method of winging across cook Strait is not working during the calm weather we have had here of late.
Take care and go the Crusaders.
xoxo Peter
