Its Wednesday again..........!!!

Hi everyone

Well its been a long and busy few days and blogging hasn't been high up the list! The first stage of Thursdays blood transfusion went OK - second unit not so good when Sara had an allergic reaction about half an hour into it. This resulted in the transfusion being stopped and meds being administered to sort out the reaction. This was done within a couple of hours and we were off to radiation just a little later than scheduled.

Post the transfusion, Sara felt much better, as expected, late Thursday and Friday. So late Thursday afternoon we went to look at wigs and do a little shopping. On Friday we went to the radiation treatment, had meetings with the dietician and the Canteen organiser, Koral. Sara visited the art therapist, Diana, around lunchtime in the art room and spent her time in the sandbox. We had a couple of quick visits from Mac and Anne and my sister Ruth before heading home and having a barbecue tea with John and Glenda who were staying the weekend in Christchurch with us. A very busy couple of days.

Sara was very tired on Saturday and slept all morning. Later that evening we were back in hospital after she had another seizure like episode after dinner. It was a very fast dash to the hospital around 10.00pm, up Ferry Road as her condition appeared to worsen. She was admitted to the Childrens Acute Assessment Unit as CHOC was full. So another night in hospital on Saturday night with Sue and I staying over and then she stayed on right through Sunday and Monday while they sorted out the medication for what is suspected to be radiation induced swelling. By Monday she was back to her more normal self but still very tired.

Treatment (radio and chemo) continued on Monday as scheduled and then Sara had a side trip to Glassons on the way home. My sister Ruth came and stayed the night on Monday, (after spending the weekend at the family bach at Bealey with Mum, Hugo, and Harry) and we had some healing touch and massage sessions on Tuesday morning before she winged her way home to Canada last night. We all went to the airport to say our farewells and wishing she could stay longer. We will miss her lots, but I am sure Lothar, Katherine and Stefan can't wait to see her home in Kitimat on Thursday!

We have had a couple of chats with Kate and she is having fun and enjoying a bit more snow. She got promoted to ambulance duty the other night so got to ride into Taos as an ambulance officer!

We have more radio and chemo today (day 11 - Sara is one third of the way through the radio)and Sara will be spending lots of the day sleeping as the radiation tiredness has really set in. Later in the week another MRI scan is being scheduled to check up on the reasons for Saras episode on Saturday night.

Thanks everyone for the continuing stream of messages, cards and little suprises for Sara. They certainly help to lift the spirit. Please continue to phone before visiting and as Sara gets more tired we will probably have to restrict the visiting more so she gets to sleep and recover between the radio and chemo sessions.

Love from Sara, Sue and Rob

Hi Youngs - and especially Sara.
Just wanted to let you know that I check and read this blog religously (when I'm supposed to be working!) and spend much of my time sending pink, fluffy, support-thoughts across Christchurch to you all. Sara - I am in complete awe of you and the way in which you are coping with this enormous hurdle. Well done! And as Winston Churchill said: If you're going through hell, keep going!
Many well wishes
From Amelia Norman (et al)

Hey Sara and family!

I thought I would let you know that I'm getting my school behind you, your in all of our thoughts. As I write this I'm in my deputy principals office and we are going to raise money for the cancer society as a school. Motueka High school is going to sponser a member of our school in a "relay for life". Which gives its money for the cancer society.I will be giving a presentation to the school to raise money. You have inspired us all Sara. Your quote about never giving in is going on the leaders traning day brochure for the leaders in the Nelson area. I hope you don't mind me mentioning you in my presentation.
To your family, stay strong you are being a great support. Bless you Young family,
Love, Sophie and the great support at Motueka High School

Hi Sara, I was talking with Robyn yesterday and wondering how things are going. Also bumped into Jane Ellis and found another link in the chain of people who are thinking of you. Keep up with the good work, we're thinking of you and the rest of the family everyday here too.

Go well.

What a brave, brave family you are. Thanks for taking the time to update us all.
Remember:
"When you get into a tight place and it seems you can't hold on for a minute longer, never give up, for that's just the place and time the tide will turn."
(I'm sorry I don't know who said it, but I like it anyway!).
We were expecting Dean's Dad and sister this afternoon but Harold is in Timaru hospital having fallen down stairs and broken his clavicle and possibly punctured a lung.
Take care, all of you, you are special people.
Sandy
Oh Jacqui - all is quiet next door!

Dear Sara, Rob, Sue and Kate
Just got back from Wellington where I had a few computerless days - felt wierd not having access to your blogsite!! Wonderful to come home to an update on Sara's activities. You are in the thick of it now but hopefully the care and support you are getting not only from Twizel and Christchurch but most other corners of New Zealand as well as all those international contacts you have will be giving you an extra bit of strength and will. It is being sent to you in bucket loads! Constant love and thoughts from us. Anne, Bob, Hayden and Bridie xxx

Hey Girlfriend, Youve been a very busy 'young' lady reading your blog. Hopefully you can soon start to take control of the bad times you sometimes have.A good friend in a similiar situation told me about planning for an hour at a time of good times, then it was a day at a time, before long he could plan for a weekend at a time and so on until he began to get a thrill out of planning exciting things for himself a month and then a year ahead.
Just one point about your blog, on Friday it said you spent the lunch hour in the sand box. At school here in Twizel I always thought you were house trained.
All our thoughts and love are with you.
Bob and Helen.

Hi all,
Glad to finally have an update as it has been a while and we're all concerned at the lack of contact, but understandably know how busy and mentally worn you all must be, and "blogging" definately wouldn't be at the top of your list of priorities, we thank you for taking the time to do so when you do can.
Sorry to hear that it's been a rough week. Sometimes things can be bloody cruel and if getting the tumour wasn't bad enough, having a hard time with the treatment really is a *******!
Our love and support is with you. Each and everyday you are thought of and we eagerly check the web for an update, especially the photos, they make us grin!!!
Jordan has returned to school in Timaru now, we miss her heaps but I think she was excited about catching up with her mates. Twizel is same old, Connie, Jaq and all those who went to Hong Kong will be in the last few days of their trip. It's amazing how quick time goes, but I'm sure they have all had a good time.
The weather has been warm, but also windy today.
Anyway, just wanted to let you all know that your in our thoughts. As I've said before, if there is anything we can do please don't hesitate to let us know.
Hang in there Sara, your a strong woman mentally and spiritually and we don't doubt that if anyone can get through this-you can-and we'll be there for you 110%
Best wishes, keep smiling sunshine!

Hello darling Sara, Kate, Rob and Sue

Zoe and I have just been walking up the hill - it's a good catch up time - and she was saying she's going in the Relay for Life here in Nelson also - the one that Sophie mentioned. She and her friends have a team of ten and I think the idea is that you keep going all night. All over the planet there are people
connected through you. What treasures you are.
Much love from Mart, Jane, Zoe and Toby

Hey Sara and the Youngs!
I've just had 3 weeks on prac at Kings High School and have a nasty cold from being in the presence of 800 germy boys, but its nothing compared to all that you are going through at the moment Sara! Your courage is truly insprirational.
Just thought I'd drop a quick few lines to say g'day and let you know that the I'm thinking about you and sending good vibes (I sent good vibes to my friend penny during her law exam the other day and she swore they helped!).
Not much is happening here in Dunedin, it is O-week at the moment so there are thousands of binge-drinking scarfies everywhere. Trust me its not all its cracked up to be Sara, my flatmate drank the better part of a bottle of tequila last night on top of various other concoctions (idiot) and I bet you could have beat him in a walk round the block this morning, he was in a shocking state!
Best of luck for the days ahead girl!
Hugs,
Amy :)

Hi guys. Friday 2:56pm. Back from a solid week with MGMH classes at Huxley. Stuffed. How does anyone recover after a week with Zoe all but non-stop? It's a miracle the girl doesn't float away spouting all that hot air the whole time. Sorry your week's been a bit crappy team. Keep hanging in there - when you reach the end of the rope, tie a knot and hang on! Will try to give you a more positive update on camp and life etc over the weekend.
Cheerio
Granty
Oh yes p.s. Ellen (and Taco by proxy) had their baby at lunchtime today: Noah Op't Ende weighed 3.2kg / 7lb 4oz. Yay!
