More than a week of news!
Hi everyone
Another weekend has gone by and we had a very relaxed time with lots of rest for Sara. It has been cold here in Christchurch for the last couple of days and its another cool one this morning, so a lot of time spent inside. Alan Gleave came over Saturday night for dinner and Sara and Alan enjoyed some time together including watching a movie. She enjoyed hearing about the rowing results from Twizel during the weekend, both from the bloggers and texters and on Newstalk ZB - well done to Caitlin and Zoe for the fantastic results - no doubt a little disappointing that Sunday's races were cancelled. Sara wore her rowing top on Sunday as a good luck charm but it obviously didn't work a treat!
Sara had her best week last week since before the start of radiotherapy. She was feeling much better and the medication for the various side effects seems to be working well. Thursday's blood transfusion which went smoothly, was also a positive step after the previous one where she reacted to the blood. Following the blood transfusion, which was being given to raise her haemaglobin levels (dealt to by the radiation treatment) she felt much more energetic.
On Friday, Sara reached the three quarters mark for the radiotherapy treatment, she now has only 7 treatments to go to complete the 6 week treatment. Friday afternoon we finished at the hospital and then went into town for a bit of retail therapy for Sara and then had a meal out together.
Sara had another healing touch session with Debbie Carter during the week and this will be a regular event for the next few months. She is really enjoying this session and Debbie is great with her and helping Sara feel positive and giving her lots of strength and ways to take her through the radio and chemo side effects. While the radio and chemo are dealing with the disease the healing touch along with the relaxation and meditation sessions from Nicki are allowing Sara and us to take a more holistic approach to healing Sara.
The week was busy with the routine things like the daily trip to the hospital for radio, plus the chemo on Monday and Wednesday, visits from the OT and dietician and the healing touch and relaxation sessions and an art therapy session. We also finalised the antioxidant treatment for Sara with CHOC and Dr Ted Pearson and visited Cynthia at the Child Cancer Foundation. The Foundation have been fantastic in helping us with information and funding some of the additional costs we are faced with - a big thank you to them from us. And Cynthia gave Sara a box of bubble gum for jaw exercises which Sara is very excited about! Plus she also got a Gallaz cap signed by Silver Fern, Vilimaina Davu - how cool is that!
On Friday we had a meeting with Clare (Sara's art teacher from Twizel), Art Therapist, Diana and the Regional Health School teacher Sarah to discuss the art units which Sara will work her way through over the next few months, when she feels up to it. It was great to get everyone involved together and Sara feels really positive about doing some art. The art therapy with Diana has also been really helpful in helping her cope and deal with things in a holistic way.
It was great to see Clare and Mackenzie on Thursday and Friday and Sara really enjoyed spending time with her nearly 3 year old friend. We hadn't seen Clare and Mackenzie since December.
Kate is enjoying some powder snow at last but only has 2 weeks till closing date. She is hoping to take a trip up to Colorado before coming home on the 10th April.
This week all the treatments are in the afternoon so its relaxed mornings for all of us this week.
Thanks to everyone for all the blogs, texts and cards and pressies - they continue to be an inspiration and provide great pleasure to all of us, especially Sara.

Yaye I am first this time!!! Thank you for the last update. You guys have really been very busy. I am so glad that you finding some sort of peace with your healing sessions. I have a friend doing similar things and she finds it really peaceful and helpful.
We are on school holidays now and the Com games are about to start so it is a very exciting time here in Melbourne. The city is buzzing and everyone is picking up the vibes. I was taking the kids into the city today but Isobel came home from work yesterday and said that she has to work today too so that was the end of that. We'll go another day. The kids want to soak up the atmosphere. Our temperatures have been in the high 30's and the silly people who designed the athletes village didn't even put airconditioning in the cabins even after spend $90 million on it!!! The respective team leaders of the different countries have been running out to buy fans and portable airconditioners. How ridiculous! Apart from the odd hiccup the city is ready for the games and has showcased its assets beautifully.
I hope your retail therapy went well. Nothing like a good session to help boost morale. I just might do some today. Isobel is working and Nick is going to his cousins. We have a public holiday today and tomorrow I am back to work after having 2 weeks off for my operation etc.
Hang in there kiddo. I'm thinking of you. Love to all.
Love Susan, Nick and Bel xxxx
Hi Sara,Rob and Sue
and Kate in the US.
Great to get the update of where things are at. We all send our best wishes from Kitimat. Pat Kendra, and Ethan Mouland skied out to the moose hut for lunch with us.Pat was asking after you, she has been blogging but hadn't got the latest imfo. It was so nice to catch up Pat the first time since being back home. Her kids are ski racing now, so it is great to get out with them and encourage them on.
Sara I am so happy the healing touch and the relaxation are helping you out. Your open spirit and belief in your own power are so amazing.
I am glad you got to visit with Clare and her almost 3 year old. Kids can be so amazing and healing.
We are enjoying the most amazing skiing and sun here. As I said in my letter we got to go out to the Moose cabin Friday night, no moose there but wolves howling. Lothar and I got to spend the night out there. Wow Moonlight skiing no headlamps needed. It was great.
Just a big hug from me and a big smile for you all from us here. Love Auntie Ruth and Lothar, Stefan the snowbaorder, and Katherine.
Hey Sara and Sue and Rob
Great to hear news about you all and that things are going well.
That Mackers is such a sweetheart and such a grown up little girl who certainly knows her own mind!
Pity about the cancellation of rowing on Sunday and even more so when it turned out to be a really hot and still afternoon!
Real autumn colours in the pin oaks in the Market Place now Sara. Beautiful reds and yellows - they seemed to have turned so quickly and there was a frost this morning again.
Taylor is back in a cast for his wrist for another four weeks and then another CT scan and then a decision about whether they should operate. That and his foot in a cast means he is quite limited in what he can do - he is however pushbiking around and managing to do some work on his motorbike. I am trying to persaude him to cover his casts up - oil does not come off the fibreglass type stuff they do the casts in.
While he was waiting for the cast to dry in the plaster room there was a guy in the bed opposite. I took a quick glance and was surprised to see he was holding a handful of saveloys with tomato sauce. Then I realised they were his fingers. Just about threw up there and then!
Thinking of you all and sending all our best wishes and hugs.
Connie and Taylor

Hi guys
This wretched computer of mine just ate my message! Anyway, it's good to see a fresh blog page after all the Canty / Otago battling on the last one. I can't understand what Bob's problem is: all he has to do is keep betting on the Highlanders, and when their ship does come in, the odds will be so good he'll be rich enough to buy the rest home.
Loved the piccie's Sara. Adrienne was awed by Ritchie and the boys the day they played in Timaru a week or two back. I got back to the car from a calorific search and destroy mission and she was just bursting about the men in red and black who'd "WALKED RIGHT PAST THE CAR!! ALL OF THEM! ON STAFFORD STREET!"
My room and surrounding environs have now recovered from the 'fart bomb' let off by da 12 English boyz this morning. I bet Cheese and crew wouldn't stoop to that sort of thing.
Must go home and see my own boys before the autumn evening closes in here in Twiz. Hope that the positivity of recent days continues for you all.
Take care team
Lol

Hi Sara, Sue and Rob
Today it was awesome after a chilly start of minus 17 the temps quickly rose to +2, the sun shone and we took to the frozen lake on our skate ski's. Initially I thought I would just puddle around the edge but was drawn across the ice to the people sitting in their shacks, ice fishing. I was midway across the lake, with Steve way ahead, when I heard this loud boom. The kind of boom that makes your stomach lurch. Someone yelled earthquake! Another yelled "No" just the ice shifting.... and I'm in the middle of the lake!!!! It is so amazing how you learn to ski fast and I mean really fast without falling to get to the edge of the lake. After much reassuring from Steve that there was 2ft of hard ice below me, that the trucks on the ice were safely getting around, and were probably heavier than me, it would be okay to keep sking. As we neared the end of the lake we watched a ski plane take off across the ice so I decided that although the movement of the ice was a little airie I would probably be okay.
Over the weekend we watched the Oscar movies "Crash" and the "Constant Gardner" , have you seen them yet? Both were different and we enjoyed them.
The holistic healing sounds really great Sara, and we are really happy that you are so far through the treatment. Keep smiling and keep warm. Big hugs
Hi U4. I posted earlier this afternoon so where is it? Somewhere in outer space? Great to hear things are going well. Hope this week is another good one. Hey Trish, I would have been scared of the ice moving too!
Take care, from Sandy, Dean, and the three most beautiful red-head boys in the world.
Hi Sara and Rob and Sue and other important family and support people, I can't believe for one second that Cheese found it hard to talk for 4 mins about anything???? Anyway went down to the lake to see our girly's row and they were great, didn't get to see the world famous Cheese tho bit of a blow, damn I feel close to that girl. I love the games too should be fun watching.
Sarah P we all miss you too but hang in there it will soon be Easter and you'll be home. Jake and crew off to athletics in Timaru tomora hope they all go well. Congrats on being more than half way thro your treatment Sara and it is going well that is wonderfull news. Sending bigs hugs and lots of love to u all. Love Jacq & Jake
hey sez
You sound really busy. But yay things sound like there going pretty well! Oarsum! you keep up those positive vibes gurl! yeah had some great races on saturaday. we qualified for the u16 dub 2nd fastest, caighead beat us by half a second but i'm sure we could go faster if we had them beside us(instead of the rest of the crews being at the 200 while we were finnishing, lol it felt good!)we were also 2nd fastest qualifier for the u17 dub, got beaten by malbough girls , but they came 2nd at maadi last year, so were feeling good bout u17 dub aswell now! I also made an A final for my single! WOW! and bet zoes time by 4 second, i was so shocked! i think she was just cruzing though. anyway we were heading up for the singles final and of course the wind had to make an apperance! It got so bad that we all had to come into shore at the start. then the twizel trailer came to the rescue and took all the singles back. GRRRRRR i am so angry about that wind! And some silly race officals decided that the wind was there to stay, meanwhile the pilots in the area i.e wayne and dave, were saying that it would die down. And guess what happend???? just as everone was driving out of town the wind stoped and the lake was as flat as glass. Ansd then we couldn't go training bercause they still had the blue flag up, and apparentkly they can take away your rowing lience if you go out when its up!(i didn't know we had rowing liences) any way i could go on about it for ages, actually i think i have! oops!
But bob was right when he said that you have a big part to play in us doing so well!( unless we screw up at maadi, then its the winds fault) thank you for your insperation! yay we 've got p.e next! i finally figured out how to roll my kayak! sort of any way! about time!
Hey Remeber last year how we came 2nd at siss and you made us tin can lid medals? That was so cool! We miss you heaps here, zoe and i are geting sick of each other. Its actually turned to physical violence now, shes got buises all over her arm from me puching her! anyways g2g loving you heaps
caketin! Keep being positive!
XOXO

so its all go for the next week good to hear the weekend was a great one finally got rid of Barry well he and Jude have gone back to Wanaka , christ knows how they deal with all that , the people in Wanaka must be wonderful folk ,couldnt cope in Nelson same story in the Mackenzie Basin just keep heading south there is still Bluff . Feels like a car swap round here at present much fixing and roar or is it splutter , of engines . Good weekend on the bike with Col ,great country went to this old fire tower it ,as you would expect , had an amazing view . Hope your week is good keep those spirits high see you soon Good night from us on the bend
Dear Sara
Is that a clue from Cheese - is her name Sara with an H?
Just worked out who those folk on the bend are. This blog site is good for the brain! It's like a crossword puzzle but maybe not quite as good as Sudoku! Actually have an addled brain from an evening of parent - teacher interviews so might need a night cap to tell the brain to stop thinking. Didn't help that last night a "middle-aged woman" (Mart said) rang here at midnight and thought she was connecting to the internet! And then rang again 20 minutes later when we had just fallen asleep! Not the best way to get our beauty sleep. And at that hour of the night one can do an awful lot of thinking about ERO visits and which i's still need to be dotted and which t's need to be crossed.
Much love to you all
Jane and Mart and Zoe
hey gurly. good to hear that everythings going sweet aye. not long now till i go to TE ANAU! lol. do you remember when we went on our kayaking trip and we walked around the camp in our pjs? lol good times aye? and when someone was outside our tent and we were like freaking out majorly trying not to move or breathe or anything. and when we were on the actual thing and we stole cody and daniels coke lol... well should i say I STOLE THE COKE! hehehehe. well i better cruise because mrs frost keeps hinting for me to do some work lol
luv u lots xox
Hi Sara, Rob and Sue.
Last time I blogged you it went to someone on another planet so hope this reaches you OK.
A great pity the regatta got abandoned last Sunday as we were keen to see what our rising stars were up against in the finals. (Caketin, be careful you don't give too much away in your blogs, we know the opposition read them big time, eh cheese n Kate)
Marg Armstrong has lent us a brand new rather large marque which we errected behind Villa(great neighbors)so it was good to have somewhere to shelter from the sun etc. and provide nourishment for our athletes. The marque is red and white and Hank the Tank wound up the Villa ladies after we had put it up by telling them that cheeky St.Margarets had put their tent right up against Villa's.
Had a BBQ at Bob and Helens on Sunday after the regatta, a lot of fun and "GO Bob" was in top form.
So was Caketin who fell backwards off her chair, I think she must have been on something.
Out on the lake at 06.15 this morning we were witness to the setting of the moon against the mountains to the west, and the rising of the sun to the east, it is certainly a great way to start the day. (Wives are complaining about being rowing widows)anyway it will be all over soon and everyone will be able to get back to normality and hopefully we will find some time to get out and see you all.My Mother has asked me to send her a photo because she has forgotten what I look like, so guess I had better find time to go see her as well.
Thinking of you all out there.

Hi
Pooh and Piglet story from the Grant family files last night. Staggered in after staff meeting to poor fraught wife and whining children. Tom and I went out for a walk up to the shell station, where we sat and watched a man unloading an enormous double articulated truck with the forklift. Tom absolutely riveted: big trucks are not too far behind helicopters and diggers in his list of all time favourite things. Then the truckie put the forklift away AND OFFERED US A RIDE AROUND THE BLOCK! Tom most intrigued as I hoisted him up into the cab, and busily looked out the windscreen down to the road which seemed a long way down. I scrambled up after him and took him onto my lap for the drive around Tasman Road and past the school. Tom promptly wet his pants. Massively. All over me. It was a damp trip round the block in the truck, but I think Tom enjoyed it. Hope you all had a good day.

ive been back at uni for a few weeks now...talk about increase in work load from last year! i'm doing third year forestry papers as well this year coz uni has decided to stop my degree next year due to lack of interest. so that was a bit of a downer, but hey, it keeps me busy and out of trouble...not! anyways, i've got two assignments i should be doing right now...so i'll scoot and make some progress.
thinking of you sez, catch up soon

LOL). The photos are great, loving the do's! Our thoughts are all with you up on Ward 28. Will have to catch up soon, Erin
Art therapy is a great thing.
Hey Youngs, Dr.serani is a woman of few words eh?? Jake got secind yesterday in he Sec. schools athletics and has qualified for South Islands( 3000 m running) very proud and pleased, thats on the weekend of the 25 & 26 Mar 2006. Last night me and another lady and the rowing chicks were in a accidents as practice for the firees and ambo people, i was in a overturned car with Cheryl and the other lady(Rangi) and we had bowled the rowing chicks over whilst they were on their way home from rowing practise. Very gorey very scary great acting spectacular rescue good fun. It went real well, I was a quiet person with spinal and pelvis injuries, had to get cut out of the car and put on spinal board etc. It was scary but all the emergency service people strut their stuff and learnt heaps as we did, will be going slowr down to rowing from now on. Weather nice today after cloudy start.Keep well love an hugs to you all love from Jacq & Jake
Sara, Rob, Sue, and Kate with the waist-deep powder!
Lots of blogs on here at the moment. Jane up there in Nelson, good luck with ERO and where is on-the-bend, please tell me! Jacqui next-door, I'm glad your injuries were not real. Alan I laughed very loudly at your misfortune with Tom. Just as well you love him so much, of course he is very lovable! Ryan and Kyle certainly think so.
A funny incident at the pool tonight, we were down watching Josh swimming, he has been having great sessions with Simon Fox and a couple of others. Ryan fell over on the concrete, let out a mighty roar and lay there feigning helplessness. Everyone turned around to watch as Josh and Dean made a mad dash towards him. Immediately Kyle hit the deck, right beside Ryan, completely copying his position and screaming just as loudly, much to everyone's amusement. Twins are a delight!
Hope your week is going well. Dean is en route to CHCH now for a meeting in the morning but will leave you in peace this time. Take care, and great skiing Kate! Sandy.
Hi Sez
Just as an adjunct to Jacqui's comments about last night's emergency sevices training exercise: on my way home from the lake tonight, I almost bowled two unnamed rowers who were weaving all over the road climbing up the hill from the lake. Guess being covered in blood and gore last night hadn't quite sunk in for those two yet (and hey - I thought these rowers had big strong quads - what are they doing needing to weave all over the place climbing a tiny hill like Max Smith Drive?)
Yours inflammatory and aggravating
Granty
Hey Sez and Family!
Soooooo pleased things are getting better! I've been in contact with Kelly from the Nelson Cancer Society and my school has a commitee starting, ( which im leading!) to raise money! Cool eh? Yeah I'm going to take HEAPS of pictures and send them to you! My mate Ame is going to shave off her hair on bandana week and Luke is going to wax his legs, will def get photos for your amusement! If you could pretty please post me your addy so I can write you a letter and send you some photos. By the way Mr Grant have come to the conclusion you are BY FAR the BEST english teacher I've ever had and this year in yr13 English it is hard and wish you were teaching me. When reading comments I always get a sense of Twizel home sicknesses.. oh well not much you can do about it.. Sara the other day i was struck by the memory of us walking up and down and up and down that time at rowing. LOL, oh the shame of it.
Well my lovely prince charming your Snow White has got to go finish very hard english essay!
My family sends their love, so does randoms at my school!
Love Sophie x0x0x0x0x0x0x
